Unlimited CDN capacity at a fixed price: ORS launches "Nakolos"
Together with bitstem GmbH ORS launches their new project “Nakolos” at IBC 2022 in Amsterdam
Nakolos is a joint project initiated by Austrian Broadcasting Services (ORS) and bitstem GmbH to support Content Providers and Broadcaster with their content delivery over OTT by significantly lowering their distribution costs utilizing 5G Broadcast.
"Since 2019, ORS and its R&D team have been playing a pioneering role internationally in the definition, testing and establishment of 5G Broadcast. The use of this innovative broadcasting technology shows that Austria can play a leading role in shaping a new TV era. Nakolos is our contribution to the international development of one of the most promising use cases for 5G Broadcast, namely the CDN offload use case", explains ORS Managing Director Michael Wagenhofer.
Nakolos offers unlimited CDN capacity at a fixed price
With Nakolos’ CDN-offloading solution high, unpredictable CDN costs are a thing of the past.
The unforeseeable number of concurrent mobile viewers, based on the popularity of the content streamed by media channels and live events, results in a large amount of Content Delivery Network bandwidth that must be reserved and provisioned for peak watch times. This comes at a high cost, without knowing if and when the bandwidth will be needed.
The best quality for even the largest crowd
Nakolos automatically offloads traffic from CDNs utilizing 5G Broadcast helping Broadcasters and Content Provider to save CDN distribution costs. This is made possible by using the advantages of 5G Broadcast, which allows to receive any IP-based stream (DASH, HLS, CMAF, …) from terrestrial high-power-high-tower transmitters over 60 km directly on mobile devices such as mobiles or tablets. With Nakolos it does not matter how many people are watching the stream, the solution guarantees the best quality for an unlimited number of recipients.
An easily integrable solution
The 3GPP-based solution consists of a lightweight, single-line integrable software for apps on mobile phones and tablets. It handles the logic of combining different distribution channels. A cloud-based control system monitors the current load of content in specific areas, provisions the 5G Broadcast system and redirects the user devices to an unlimited source of CDN capacity.
Live demo at IBC 2022
At IBC 2022, a demo with a live 5G Broadcast signal (using a modified 5G-MAG Reference Tools transmitter) and the first-time integration of Nakolos in a commercial OTT app will be shown. For the IBC Demo, the project is supported by a video back- and frontend provided by Insys Video Technologies.
